Each day, many of our students struggle to manage the stress of school along with the trauma they face or have faced in their lives outside of school. Providing our most in-need students with Calming Corners will give them the tools they need to remain engaged in classwork and prepared for the daily challenges they face. Should this project be funded, our students will begin to have access to curriculum that will help teach them the necessary skills they need to keep themselves regulated, even in high-stress moments. Additionally, it will provide a space within each classroom where students can go when they are frustrated, sad, scared, or angry and would benefit from a quiet space and sensory tools, without having to leave the classroom.
Currently, when students need a quiet moment to calm down, they often find themselves alone in the hallway or the school office. This project, if funded, will enable teachers to keep students in their classroom and meet their emotional needs. The sensory items help students stay in class while learning to stay calm, which helps keep academic skills from falling behind. This will also lead to increase student safety and create more positive, accepting classroom environments.
