Our school uses Accelerated Reader, an online program that pairs student-selected, independent reading with online quizzes to assess their understanding. My scholars' AR points are part of their reading grade each quarter, so these texts will be used frequently.
One thing that is relatively common knowledge is that students of color have access to far fewer books that represent their faces, experiences, and cultural systems. This project's intent is to place AR books that represent my scholars' own interests and experiences into their hands.
The last piece of the project's purpose is to supplement non-fiction texts. Some of the books in the cart are related to our quarterly anchor texts. Others are to provide biographies of our school's "giants who have gone before us," miscellaneous inspirational leaders in American history. The hope with all the non-fiction texts is to deepen their knowledge of history and the people who have gone before us.
