Maya Angelou once stated, "It is time... to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.“ Overtime, the student population has become more diverse. We are now working to grow a collection as diverse as our school community.
With these new books, my students will have access to diverse stories, allowing them to experience other people's unique lives and experiences, as well as seeing themselves in the stories. We have such a diverse population of students in our school. Our students differ culturally and socio-economically. They differ in physical and mental ability. Their families and home life are unique. Books in which they see themselves in the stories are vital in engaging them in reading. Experiencing stories of people who are different from themselves builds empathy and compassion for their classmates.
