The book, The Hate U Give, develops a conscious cultural awareness while engaging the students with a text and subject matter that they find directly relate-able. This would allow scaffolding for students of various reading levels while allowing for all students to participate in the class discussions. Direct correlations to motifs and themes can be drawn to the existing 9th grade curriculum and will allow for inquiry driven research to be conducted by students for a personalized learning unit in which writing and speaking skills will be emphasized.
The issues in the text will help the students grapple with issues in their own lives. The students have shown tremendous growth so far this year and with this project, their passion for reading will be fueled. This is a text that needs to be addressed in our school to start important conversations. My hope is that those conversations will bring together school, home and community; a necessary circle these students need supporting them!
