As a school counselor, I work with students in grades kindergarten through five individually, in small groups, and weekly to provide classroom guidance lessons to whole classes. It is my passion to provide these resilient kids with the tools to better understand their own and others' emotions, to learn to how to cope with difficult life situations, and to get along with others.
My students will benefit from these books as they will be able to learn from relatable characters in the stories. These books have been selected to help with character building and the social-emotional learning that is crucial in elementary school. During classroom guidance lessons with the school counselor, my students will learn from these books about different topics. For example, my students will learn about saying no to bullying through "The Recess Queen" and "Tease Monster; a Book about Teasing vs. Bullying." Four of the books "I'm Gonna Like Me," "How to Be Comfortable in Your Own Feathers," "Spaghetti in a Hotdog Bun," and "A Bad Case of the Stripes" will help students learn to love themselves and build confidence. Other books such as "What to Do When You Worry Too Much A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety," "Mindful Monkeys," and "When Sophie Gets Angry-- Really Really Angry" will help students learn to cope with tough feelings such as anxiety and anger. When students feel confident, safe, and are able to cope with difficult emotions and life situations, they are more successful in and out of school.
