The girls in Sisterhood often want a snack during group. Although they have a light "dinner" before group, many of them ask if we have snacks available during group. Several may ask to use the water fountain several time which is disruptive and breaks the momentum of group.
Snacks help kids to focus and stay on task. Snacks can motivate reluctant participants because they lend to a more relaxed and informal environment - even while in school. Some of our students are in homes that don't have extra money for anything but the basics. In addition, while the school maintains a snack/supply store, many students cannot afford to purchase them.
Providing snacks during Sisterhood sends a message that we are nurturing not just their minds, but their physical being as well. Snacks also ensure that the girls go home and have the energy to focus on homework while waiting for dinner.
