At the moment, I have one iMac in my classroom for eight students at a time. I must allocate time among students to allow them to access the computer for research, access to word processing, access to social learning programs, and access to mathematics programs. Additionally, the computer serves as a reward for many students, in that it gives them access to a world outside their neighborhood. My students will benefit significantly from having access to Chromebooks in the classroom that will allow them access to programs like Social Express, Mathletics, and STMath, but I want to go further. Chromebooks will allow me to teach students how to use mathematics to evaluate real-world problems, and write papers about their analyses. I would love the opportunity to introduce students to financial analysis - researching commodity prices, and examining the effect of commodity prices on household products - in a way that makes abstract concepts more concrete. Students can conduct research on Chromebooks, and write a daily journal about their findings. Thus, I could teach them mathematics and technical writing at the same time. Chromebooks could allow my students to unlock their potential.
