My students have a passion for reading. When considering to become a teacher when I was in elementary school, I decided to start saving all of my books for my future students. So, when I started teaching in August 2017, I had almost 300 books set aside for my students to enjoy. However, my collection is lacking in what I perceive to be some of the most important literature.
My students are in desperate need of diverse books. I am trying to help shape citizens of the world, and I want them to be exposed to a variety of ideas, people, and lifestyles. My goal for this project is to get my students nonfiction books about important women and African-Americans in history, as well as books that touch on the experience of living with disabilities. It is my hope that my students can read these and feel more empowered as future world-changers and be more empathetic towards their peers.
