Last year, the WHMS Drama Club worked very hard to bring to life the story of Simba from "The Lion King", who dared to take a risk and leave his comfort zone to be the best lion that he can be. It was during this time that I had the privilege to observe our students also take multiple risks and leave their comfort zones to be the best that they could be both on the stage and off.
This past year, our school became a Leader in Me school, which highlights the leaders that are within all of our students and encourages them to act upon that potential. I challenged myself to empower as many students as possible by offering multiple ways that they could get involved and take a leadership role within this production. The sets, props, costumes, and lighting were all designed and created by the students of this school. These students sacrificed their free time during lunch and recess as well as after school to create the amazing technical elements of our show. Over 100 students contributed in some way to the success of this show. These students embodied the Leader in Me habits and have brought me hope for the future.
I would like to continue to expand the theatre program at my school by putting on an extraordinary production of "Annie," as I see how involvement in theatre can be extremely beneficial for our students personal, emotional, and social growth. Our school has a limited performing arts budget and we do not charge students to participate due to socioeconomical limitations. I would like to use the donations given through this organization to offset the cost of putting on this production.
