The theatre department in my school is an epicenter for creativity, acceptance, and achievement. Many of our students see our theatre department as a safe haven where they are able to truly be themselves. Our hope is to grow our program and reach as many students on our campus as possible.
Our building houses a high school and two middle schools, and I am the sole theatre teacher for all of them!
We are a low income district with 70% of our students on free or reduced lunch. Currently, only 23% of our students can read and write at or above grade level. I am a firm believer that theatre increases literacy and transforms how students think about reading and writing. My students often score above average across all academics, and are leaders on campus.
