Many of our students are first time campers and have not spent a lot of time out of doors. Our Healthy Lifestyles program provides them with opportunities to go camping for the first time. Many of our Latino families are supportive of their children's desire to "Change Reality" and begin a culture of outdoor lifetime activities. As they camp, kayak, and bicycle for the first time in Utah's outdoor playground, that change is becoming visible. Many students at our district sponsored charter school do not have their own gear for these adventure activities. We have been able to acquire a small amount of camping gear, kayaks, and mountain bikes that allow them to participate in ways they have only dreamed about. As we continue our program we are seeing an ever increasing interest in getting outside and are replacing fear and apprehension with a sense of adventure and exploration. They are even willing to leave their electronic media at home, and experience nature with enthusiasm and curiosity.
