By the time my students get to 4th grade, they have mastered many basic musical instruments. To challenge them further, I would love to offer them the chance to play ukuleles.
Ukuleles will allow my 4th graders to play and sing at the same time, which will encourage them to choose songs that have personal meaning to them. I love to give my students choice and voice but that is hard to do when only some play and others sing. being able to sing and play will allow more groups and more participation.
I have an after-school group which plays with a limited number of ukes and all the students are envious of that group. This will allow me to provide all my students with the same opportunity.
