During the 2017-2018 school year, on January 30, our school held workshops about structural racism, intersectional black identities, black history, and anti-racist movements for a nationally organized week of action: Black Lives Matter at School. Educators in over 20 cities participated in this national uprising to affirm the lives of Black students, teachers, and families including, Seattle, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and beyond. This year, our school (and others across the country) will be participating in the second annual Black Lives Matter Week of Action. Regular classes are suspended, and instead we hear from powerful members of the Black community. They will speak on topics from police violence to portrayals of Blacks in film and literature. Through these talks, students will gain a new understanding, and deeper compassion, for Black lives and experiences. For this particular project, we are focusing on two workshops: a panel discussion on the paucity of Black scientists and a workshop celebrating the art of West African Dance. Please consider making even a very modest contribution.
