In our district, students in fourth-sixth grades at all elementary sites are encouraged to participate in the Battle of the Books, a reading incentive program that encourages students to read across all levels and genres throughout the year. In April and May, if students qualify, they may participate in a “battle” at their school site where they will engage in team building activities and collaborate with their peers to answer questions that test their collective reading comprehension of the books. To qualify for the school site battle, students are given all year to read the required number of books from a pre-selected list of titles. Many students end up reading all 30 titles! The top students from each school will have the opportunity to participate in the District Battle.
The greatest reward, however, is the chance students have to make new friends, share a love of books and reading, test their comprehension and be honored as readers! At least one teacher from each school site and parent volunteers help with the event by reading questions, judging, and supervising making this a true community celebration of reading!
Because our school has not had a library, our students have had limited access to these titles. This grant will allow us to purchase two years' worth of titles and help our new library to grow!
