STEM stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.鈥 STEM activities give students the opportunity to problem solve, think critically, and collaborate in order to make science applicable in their own lives. The concept of STEM in the classroom has quickly jumped to the top of my priority list and my passion for it is growing each day!
I will incorporate STEM in my 2nd grade class through the use of STEM Bins. STEM Bins are containers filled with engineering manipulatives such as Magformers or Brain Flakes. Each container includes a set of task cards. The task cards picture engineering structures, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, that students can attempt to build. STEAM Bins will be used when students complete their work early and during STEM time on Fridays. Rather than early finishers filling their time with 鈥渂usy鈥 work, they鈥檒l be engaged in activities such as constructing a ramp. I am hoping to use these materials to create 24 STEM Bins so that each student has the opportunity to be engaged in engineering & creative thinking exploration at the same time.
