We are looking to create a complete sensory room to meet the needs of our diverse population of students (general, special, and Life skills education classes). We need equipment to help customize sensory routines for all students. This will include some medically complex student needs that we can not accommodate in the regular classroom setting. I would love to have a few mats to get some of our students out of their wheelchairs in a safe environment. I am also looking to utilize a crash pad and body socks to allow the student to get the physical input their bodies need throughout the day. Sensory needs are with many of our students and this only increases when the students are non-verbal like some of ours are. A sensory room dedicated to meet all of their needs would help them get their sensory input in a structured and safe environment. Since we do have students that use wheelchairs we need to have the adaptable and safe equipment.
A room designated for sensory needs would be utilized by all students in the school. Classrooms with more sensory needs would have a regularly scheduled time to come on a daily basis. If needed, other students could come down individually and utilize the sensory equipment. This will help the students receive the external sensory support they need to reset their bodies and focus them to learn in the best way they can.
