For this upcoming school year, I am dedicated to creating a learning environment for my second graders that fosters student voice and choice in their learning. Flexible seating has been proven to minimize distraction, and keep students motivated simply because they have choice in finding where they will learn best. Flexible seating will help students develop a sense of community within the classroom, which will improve their social skills, leading to academic success! My classroom is full inclusion and utilizes differentiated learning, including students with disabilities and specific needs. Whole class flexible seating allows those students, and every student, to make choices without singling anyone out. Having a variety of flexible seating options such as yoga balls, chair bands, floor cushions and more, will truly cultivate an inclusive, collaborative, and student centered environment. I am hoping that this will become a reality for my sweet second graders. Funding flexible seating in my classroom with help give my students an active outlet instead of disrupting their learning or others. They will become more independent with their choices, and the classroom will not be just mine... but ours!
