We use a program called Letterland for phonics instruction. We start as we travel to Letterland. We spend a great deal of our time of the floor working together learning basic skills to learn letters and sounds. This program requires students to get up and move. We also sing and dance with the program. Students can use the rug to play games and to partner read.
We can also use the rug for whole group instruction in Math. I teach a lot of my lessons on the carpet so children can see what is showing with our document camera. We use math kits on the carpet so they can manipulate the tools appropriately.
We can sit on the rug for almost everything from phonics, math, read aloud, games, small group reading, and anything related to kindergarten.
