We are the Roosevelt middle school 6,7th, and 8th grade boys basketball team. Roosevelt middle school is located in Oakland, California in the heart of the San Antonio district. Our players come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and nearly all come from low income households. The Roosevelt Bulldogs begin their season January 20th, 2018 in the Oakland parks and recreational league. Unfortunately, last year we were not able to register our team due to lack of funding to cover our seasonal fees. This season coaches gathered enough funding to cover the seasonal league fees. As coaches/mentors, we have an opportunity to create a positive impact towards these group of young athletes.
Many of our players live in the urban community where they face much adversity, so basketball is an outlet away from many of the obstacles they face everyday. We want to emphasize the importance of leadership, teamwork, and building as student athletes. We want our players to represent both on and off the court and in the classroom!
If donated, the resources needed we will be able to run an efficient practice where we are able to utilize all skills using multiple basketballs. We are currently trying to equip three of our players with basketball uniforms so they can match the rest of the team. If given enough donors towards our project it will make our situation of sharing equipment with two different teams less of a hassle. Our team already has scarce amount of equipment and to share it between two different teams is a stretch. Any donations are welcomed and it will make our boys season that much more memorable and enjoyable for our Oakland youth.
