I am a kindergarten teacher in an impoverished urban area. They come from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds, but one thing that keeps them bound together is their thirst for knowledge and acceptance in school. Many of my students face hardships and challenges at home that they have no control over and yet they come in to my classroom eager and excited to learn and take on new learning challenges every day! They try to let go all that goes on outside of school, so they can succeed inside the classroom! Each child in my classroom loves to read many genres of books. I incorporate a variety of reading materials to meet students where they are. My students do not have access to reading materials at home or manipulatives to help them solve math problems and critical thinking projects. They deserve the best and I, as their teacher, do my best everyday to make that happen.
