As a teacher, I am always trying to implement 21st-century skills including creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. I spend considerable time investigating ways to create lessons that engage my students to utilize these skills. My class needs these Breakout EDU kits to motivate even the most reluctant learner. Using the Breakout EDU kits, students will be challenged to complete a variety of tasks that progressively increase with rigor. A Breakout EDU kit has multiple types of combination locks that include number, shape, letter, color, and direction that need to be solved to open two different sized boxes. The objective is to uncover all clues and use clues to answer a mystery question. An example of such a question may be, "Can you use slope and rate of change to help the Party Planner obtain the missing guest list from the locked box?" This structure mirrors the concept of "Escape Rooms" that are enjoyed by people of all ages.
A variety of locks, clues, and skills will be implemented to make this growth mindset, 21st-century, learning experience. The breakout kit can be used in any academic areas, including cross-curricular, STEM, STEAM and team building making this a perfect investment. The beauty of this project is that students will be so excited and invested in solving the mystery, they won't even realize they are learning.
