My 9th grade accelerated English students will form book clubs with the 12th grade English classes, and together they will study a social justice text such as Hillbilly Elegy, Refugee and American Street from the options provided throughout the semester.
By pairing students at the beginning and end stages of their high school career, the goal is to not only challenge our students' critical thinking skills by exposing them to real-world issues in our society, but also encourage community within our school.
Through in-depth analysis of the text and thoughtful discussion, my hope is for the students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally as they expand their current perspectives of the world around them and prepare for the rigor and reality of college and the workforce.
