My art students get very excited when exploring new art materials. There are endless ways art can be inspirational however, I have found that clay brings out the ultimate "wow" factor for kids. There is something about clay that is very inviting and brings the art making process to a new level. We will build pots, reliefs or explore texture.
I believe using clay would benefit my students therapeutically above all else.
Clay alone is very soothing. Bringing something that is one of a kind into being and has never existed before, is something I am fortunate enough to see everyday with my students in art. If they are able to create something such as a pot that they can use at home, they are able to broaden the lens of their understanding of art and see its application in everyday life.
