My students all have disabilities and struggle with language, reading, and writing falling below grade-level in testing areas. This makes it difficult for them to keep up in a typical class. It is important for them to have technology that help them be successful. Having access to Kindle Fire's would help them have more time on reading and support their reading skills through fun and interactive games. Many also struggle with focus, attention, and have diagnoses of ADD or ADHD. Having a variety of seating available will help with their ability to sustain focus on lessons in the classroom. The seat cushions and special chair will allow opportunities for movement breaks to be included during lessons. These have been proven to help students with ADHD to focus for longer periods of time.
Students will use these Kindle Fires during direct therapy and instruction time to increase skills and confidence in the classroom to try and help them become closer to grade-level peers. My students often need concrete and direct examples to activate their background knowledge during reading as they have very limited personal experiences to relate from. Using technology like the Kindle would allow the students to research and make their own connections in real time during lessons, as opposed to me taking breaks to show them examples on my computer.
