The students in my class use white boards and markers almost every day. It's one way that students can show their work to their partners. Whether it's writing letters, numbers, or sight words, they take ownership and pride in having their own materials to use.
Hands-on learning seems more like fun than work! Just as with the white boards and markers, the students love to complete hands-on activities using scissors, glue, construction paper, crayons, markers, and letter beads. They are truly engaged when they are using these materials. They don't realize that when they are cutting and gluing the correct letters, rhyming words, or numbers, they are actually learning. They don't realize that when they are putting letter beads on a string to make a sight word, they are learning. They just see it as fun, but they are actually working towards meeting the grade level standards.
The journals allow the students to become brave writers and the listening center books allow the students to hear rich vocabulary that they might not otherwise get to hear while holding their own book to track the words. All of the items are about making learning fun for my kindergarteners. There's nothing better than watching my students learn without them even realizing it!
