Times have changed and whole group lectures are no longer the norm; in my classroom, we primarily work in small groups. When working with small groups I am able to help students with their specific struggles in math. This gives the opportunity for every student to succeed. In the past, I have done more teaching as a whole group, but I have found working with a small group of students is much more realistic for the kiddos. Many of my students are below grade level in many of their math targets. I work with small groups to give them the chance to ask the questions they may not have in front of the entire class. This also gives the chance for deeper understanding. I may do one approach with a group of students and then a completely different one for another. I differentiate based on my students' needs. My students are all different, but they all deserve the chance to work together and learn.
