My co-teachers and I are lucky to teach 150 wonderful students. What makes our job challenging is that each of these students learns differently, behaves differently, has a different level of comfort in class, and has different challenges and goals. They have different interests and are engaged by different things. Ensuring that our students become fluent writers is dependent on having the supplies to do so.
We use various forms of technology to engage our students in learning. Middle school students, with special needs or not, are difficult to focus. However, when you incorporate the technology that they are so used to in their daily lives, it shows them how learning, reading, and writing can be fun. Google Chromebooks allow our students to write using Google Classroom. This lets us comment on their writing in real time and give them immediate and well thought out feedback that they can preserve until they make adjustments. It also lets them have silent peer conferences as well, allowing them to develop their relationships with their peers.
