Poems are everywhere. They鈥檙e in the songs we listen to, in the cards we send, in the ceremonies we observe, and if we鈥檙e lucky, they鈥檙e in our hearts as well. In this class we will explore poems of all kinds - from epic narratives to contemporary slam and 鈥渋nsta-poems鈥- and we鈥檒l deepen our understanding by sharing the poems we love, examining how poems are put together, collecting works that speak to us, and creating poems that show the world who we really are. These books will take us there! As a department, we have many anthologies that cover the classics, but not a lot of contemporary poems or or works by young people. Next year, I will be launching a brand new poetry elective class for seniors that will immerse students in poems and poetry, and to do that we need lots of poems from lots of different voices. We'll be reading poems, writing poems, hosting a slam, publishing our work, and emerging from our time together with a deeper appreciation of the written and spoken word. We don't have a lot of academic electives in my building, so this creative poetry class will fill a real need, and these books, with their many voices, will challenge and excite our seniors.
