What I know for sure, is that students relish in reading books that are a reflection of their lives, real world experiences, as well as things they have only dreamed about. We are aware of, and moved by, the need for diverse books for children. The self-image benefits that result from children seeing people like themselves reflected in books are invaluable.
What could be better than reading a book based upon someone that has accomplished amazing feats and resembles you too? In our first session, we delved into the picture book, Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race. Our affirmation was, "I am a strong and capable student. My hard work and perseverance will help me reach my galaxy sized dreams."
