At Ruby Thomas Elementary School, we face a number of demographic challenges which include having the largest refugee population of any elementary school in the District, a large number of homeless students, a high-percentage of second-language students, as well as students in low-socioeconomic situations. These factors and a high transiency rate have resulted in historically low achievement levels. Despite these numerous challenges, I have a strong belief that all children possess unique strengths and qualities that enable them to learn and to be leaders.
Knowing that, I strive to help my students develop a mindset which encourages them to be proactive, set goals, prioritize tasks, work and collaborate together, seek to understand others' views, find value in each other, and finally, find balance in their own lives.
