"Aw, Miss..." Katy sighed and groaned. "Do I really have to read all these pages?"
Like many of my students in our under-resourced, bilingual neighborhood, Katy is a struggling reader, performing well below grade level and English is not her first language. I teach relentlessly, but I’ve learned that unless a child enjoys reading, they’re unlikely to pick up a book outside of school. That’s why I believe in the power of providing access to engaging books—especially series that can hook them in. When students find stories they love, it plants the seeds for a lifelong love of reading!
