I teach 9th through 12th grade Math at Pride Academy in Camden, New Jersey. Pride Academy is an alternative school, and my students are at Pride Academy because they have not been successful in a traditional school for one reason or another. All of my students come from the neighborhood, which is frequently violent, often dangerous, and always depressed socioeconomically.
My students struggle academically, because they are mostly far behind grade level by the time I meet them in 9th grade. Most of my students read and do math on a third grade level. And many of them struggle to see school as valuable. When my class lacks properly functioning technology, and class time is wasted waiting for outdated class technology to boot up, I feel their interest and belief in the value of my class slipping as the wasted minutes go by. I believe my students deserve better.
