Let's put books in kids' hands...for keeps! My building already has a positive academic and behavior program; however, choices for rewards are limited. After listening to the dreams of my 6th-graders, my students want to keep their books! Cue the classroom reading raffle that will contain high-interest current young adult and middle reader fiction books and graphic novels.
Students need experience with book lending from libraries, but they also need the experience of owning their own books.
All too often, teachers see a lack of print materials in homes. Books are powerful. By helping to support this project, you are helping to put books in students' hands. I love making current and high-interest books available to students, and it just gets better if I get to say that those books then belong to them. No need to bring that book back!
