Integrating technology in education is a fantastic way to engage, motivate and move students in academics. While we all know the amazing opportunities provided by technology, the reality is that many urban schools do not have adequate technology for their students. Ideally, each student would have their own device that they could use to learn. In my classroom, I have two Macs that are nearly sevem years old. Students become easily frustrated when waiting for them to load. As a result, we rarely use them. A teacher I work with utilizes Fire tablets to download educational apps and supplement his lessons. I have seen firsthand the educational opportunities these tablets provide students. When a school purchases a computer for a classroom, they spend upwards of $1,000 and use it until it dies. A computer can stay in a classroom for over five years. These tablets, with a case only cost approximately $54! A complete set for my students, with surge protectors to charge them, would cost less than a single computer! If we had tablets for each of my students, we would be able to work collaboratively using the Google Suite (Slides and Docs). We could even create amazing presentations using Microsoft’s Sway software. We could use educational apps to work on mathematics, literacy, and reading digital e-books. I could enhance my teaching by further individualizing my instruction to best meet each student at his/her own level. Having these tablets would engage my students and change the way they learn!
