Our first grade curriculum introduces using calculators. Unfortunately, most of our students are unable to afford their own. I selected the T.I. 108 calculators from Lakeshore Learning due to their durability and simplicity. During math lessons, the calculators are programmed by students to continue learning their counting. They are used during skip counting which many students find difficult.
Without calculators, students will miss out using an important tool in mathematics. Students will continue using calculators throughout their lives and introducing them early is important for future success. While computer devices have built- in calculators, they are not as easy to use as a hand-held calculator.
