As an 8th grade teacher, I am constantly looking for ways to keep my teenage students engaged and motivated. One thing I have noticed about my students is when I allow them "flexible seating" (they can move from their chair and sit/lay on the floor), nearly 3/4ths of my students always move! All day long, they are sitting in hard plastic chairs, so it's no wonder they would like a change of pace!
When I mentioned incorporating different seating options to my 8th graders, like yoga mats & bean bag chairs, they were ecstatic! By allowing students the different seating options, we are providing them with choice. They will have the choice to pick a seating option that is comfortable for them. As adults, we don't work in places we are uncomfortable, so why would we have students? Studies show there are several benefits of flexible seating in the classroom, such as: community, collaboration, choice, and COMFORT.
For my "Flexible Seating" options, I have asked for: different types of stools, backless ball chairs, bean bag chairs, floor pillows, yoga mats, and some (bed) trays that will be used as "desks" for kiddos on the floor! Thank you for visiting my page!
