I am the proud teacher of a precious group of inner-city third grade learners who are a few years into what I sincerely hope is a long and successful educational experience for each of them. Our school is a kindergarten to fourth grade public school in the heart of Philadelphia. It is comprised of about 600 neighborhood children who all qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Further, it qualifies for a Title I designation.
In our room - and in third grade, we aspire to 'hook' our students with a love of reading that will carry them through any challenges, build understanding of the world, and strengthen compassion for others through a shared experience fortified by exposure to both fiction and non-fiction texts. This requires an assortment of texts on a daily basis. We have access to a reading program which serves our shared reading purposes. For guided reading, we frequently make copies of books.
