My project is to expose the students to literature that identifies different emotions and shows what those emotions look, feel and sound like. Then to introduce literature that will give children concrete ways to work through emotions like frustration, anger or sadness. The books I have selected, like On Monday When It Rained, will help students identify their emotions. Other books such as Anh's Anger, will give them tools and strategies to work through these emotions. Students can relate to the characters in the stories and see the connections to their own lives.
The books I have chosen will help shape positive behaviors such as kindness and empathy. The literature will act as a springboard for classroom discussions and projects and as a basis for classroom expectations on how classmates relate to each other and the adults in their lives. It is my hope that sharing these books with my first graders will encourage an open dialogue about feelings and empower them all to be the masters of their emotions.
