Since the children in our classroom represent several different cultures, ethnicities, languages, and abilities, it is important that children are represented appropriately throughout the room. It makes learning more meaningful and gives children something to connect to.
Appropriate representation of the children in the room through materials validates children by showing that they are important and who they are matters. If we are only representing one type of child, we are not allowing children to express themselves or learn about others. By adding clothing and food from other countries, we are giving children the opportunity to teach each other through dramatic play. By adding materials representing differing abilities, we are giving children the opportunity to ask questions and teach tolerance.
