Families struggled to meet basic needs on a daily basis. The school currently receives a grant for nonperishable food items, which stock our food pantry. Students and families can select free items on a weekly basis to help feed their families. Currently, we do not have the ability to provide our families with nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables as a part of our food pantry. Our current grant allows us the opportunity to receive these nutritious foods, but we do not have a refrigerator to keep this produce fresh for our students. A refrigerator would be a wonderful asset to our weekly food pantry and would give families the opportunity to benefit from fresh produce. Barriers to learning come down for our students, when we can help ensure their basic needs are being met. When students know where their next meal is coming from, they are better able to focus on what is important and can grow academically. A refrigerator will help ensure these barriers to education continue to come down and students have the opportunity to learn.
