My students are thriving in an urban school district in Texas. In recent years our district has experienced many cutbacks. Unfortunately, as a Title 1 school in an area of severe poverty, "non-essential" items, like comfy cushions and extra Social Studies readers, are not a priority. Some of my students are on the free and reduced meal plans, and survive in hard times. In spite of all this, they come to school every day eager to learn. For many, it is an escape, and they capitalize on every opportunity. Their spirit and enthusiasm for learning exceeds that of many children.
