My part in developing a multi sensory learning center is to acquire a ball pit and a soft air mattress pad. For the ball pit, with direct supervision, the students will be able to work on sitting balance, body awareness sensory awareness skills and fine motor skills. What a cozy feeling it shall be for students to learn a variety of skills while they are in the ball pit. It will be motivating and inviting. It will also enhance speech skills as there will be so much to engage with. For example, collecting colored balls, sorting, sequencing, tossing games and even hiding different objects among the balls to facilitate figure ground awareness. The air mattress pad will provide a cozy place for students with significant muscle spasticity to be placed in prone, supine and side lying positions as well as a comfortable supported seated positions while working on head and neck control, visual skills, fine motor skills and postural skills. These two items will also encourage sensory regulation skills as it they can be for alerting and calming.
