Why study the holocaust? The answer to this questions is complex, but we need to put this in perspective and remember that genocide is still happening even after the Holocaust of World War II. As years past, people tend to forget, and most shocking, the fact that people are beginning to deny the holocaust. It is important for us as teachers in English and History to teach this subject and let students know about a very dark chapter in human history.
We want students to remember this event and use this as a teaching example to lead lives where compassion and kindness is something that should not be forgotten. In this period in our time where fake news and rudeness prevails, we want students to reflect and think of how they can make this place a better world one person at a time.
With this in mind, we have read Night by Elie Wiesel for the past five years, and continue to read the book so that students can learn man's inhumanity and finds ways to prevent this from occurring. This book gives us insight to the cruelty of the Holocasut, and this is something mankind must not forget. This book is an important part of our curriculum for 10th grade students and it would be valuable to have copies of this book available for our students. Currently in our classroom, we have to share copies of this book which is falling apart. Pages are torn and in some cases, pages are missing. It would be invaluable to have a good class set for students so that we can read it as a class, to learn and reflect on it, and have students take it home for study or research.
