Our school is a community school set in a socioeconomically impoverished neighborhood. When they come to my classroom I know the best chance I can give them to break the cycle of poverty is to give them the gift of literacy. Shared readings in Kindergarten must be magical, exciting and filled with strategies to help them become strong and resilient readers.
This project includes 11 big books by author Joy Cowley because her repetition and rhyme are enticing. I know these books will be key to wonderful morning reading circles. They will be used to teach strategies and also to be used as an innovative writing tool each week. I am also asking for a series of Bob books as they help beginning readers start to make the transition from repetition to blending sounds.
Finally, I am asking for a Leap Frog bundle. This set is a fun way to help students begin reading independently. These materials are going to be key in making our literacy block fun and exciting. When my scholars have strategies to read, they have strategies to succeed!
