Exposing my students to Cheri J. Meiners book collection, will provide my students with an engaging way to learn social skills. What are social skills? Social skills are behaviors and other forms of communication that help humans maintain quality relationships. There are 4 types of social skills: Survival skills which consist of listening, ignoring, and following directions. Interpersonal skills which are having the ability to share, join conversations, and take turns. Problem solving skills are when children know when to ask for help, decide what to do in situations, and recognizing when to apologize. Conflict resolution skills are when children know how to deal with bullying, being a good sport, and handling peer pressure.
Why do children need to learn social skills? As humans we need human interaction to thrive in life. Research says, 鈥淚f students don鈥檛 have the necessary social skills, it will have an impact on their interaction, academic performance, and their ability to enter the workforce as an adult.鈥 I can鈥檛 鈥渏ust鈥 teach students academics, it is imperative I include social skills as well. Social skills are not typically graded by teachers. Interestingly, social skills are 鈥済raded鈥 by their peers. If students are liked by their peers, they will enjoy school more and look forward to coming to school. If students have poor social skills, an article explains that, 鈥淪tudents can feel disconnected and left out.鈥
