My students come from economically disadvantaged homes whose families do not have the resources available to read to them. These 5 and 6 years old students are so eager to learn and just need to be given the opportunity to benefit from hearing stories read to them. Exposure to reading is important in developing vocabulary for fluency and comprehension! I have a listening center in my classroom but the CD player with its duct taped buttons often stops working mid story. The cords for the headphones are easily tangled and twisted and four of the six only produce static or sound in one of the earphones.
Having a listening center with wireless headphones would allow my students mobility and the freedom to learn in areas of the classroom free from distractions. The wireless headphones would also allow students who need a calming break or personal space the flexibility to change spots or even step outside of the classroom in order to refocus and rejoin the group without missing out on learning! I would also be able to provide students this option throughout the day. Imagine the possibilities of using a calming book as a tool to help those who need it without disrupting the learning environment!
My students are very inquisitive and energetic and are just as passionate about learning, as I am about teaching them. If a student reads 20 minutes a day, starting in Kindergarten, they will hear 1.8 million words per year! This is their opportunity to achieve that goal.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of these amazing students!
