Students will be learning about how Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history-many of the levees built to protect New Orleans failed. We will read the texts "Two Bobbies" by Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery as well as "Building Dikes and Levees" by Rebecca Stefoff. Students will be engrossed in cause and effect lessons on natural hazards and developing possible solutions for these hazards. They will also be studying the influence of engineering, technology, and science on society and the natural world. Students will learn more about levees and will be challenged to build and test a model of one using various items including Legos, sand, and gravel.
