Students learn math collaboratively and through inquiry in this sixth grade classroom. Flexible seating options will allow for student choice in their learning as well as promotes a sense of community: a necessary component of collaboration. Students will be able to better focus on the task at hand all creating a climate where learning can happen.
By allowing for a variety of seating options from the sitting on the floor to standing at a desk, growing sixth graders can find a space that is comfortable and conducive to learning. Middle school students are changing and growing quickly. There are countless things running through their head, so it can be hard for them to sit at a desk all class. Having different options such as a standing desk and balance balls can help these students manage their anxieties and be present in class. In addition to comfort, having the choice to stand and work or sit on the ground with a group will empower students to take control of their learning and be successful.
