Schools are often quick to recognize poor behavior and give consequences, including suspending students. This contradicts the purpose of education which is to keep students in the classroom where they can learn and thrive.
What you focus on, you get more of! We have created a program that recognizes/rewards good behavior, call the "Pastor Platinum Card". Students who display good behavior and make good choices are rewarded. Since the program began, we have seen a significant drop in office referrals for poor behavior. In 2016-2017, 383 students were referred to the office for behavior issues. This year the office has processed less that 120 behavior referrals because instead of focusing on negative behavior and consequences, we have shifted our focus to those students who are behaving. As a result, the number of students who have a "Platinum Card" has increased from approx. 75 students to almost 160 students!
Our reward system includes allowing "Platinum" students to spend time each day in the "Lions' Den", a student lounge created based on community donations. Students can go the the "Lions' Den" daily at lunch and play ping-pong, X-Box, Wii, board games or just hang out. It is a safe space focused on relationships and positive behavior. In addition, "Platinum" students receive random rewards such as tickets to various sporting events donated by the community.
The Snowcone Machine and Cotton Candy machine would be a great addition to our reward system! It would allow us to further reward those students who are "Platinum Card" holders with treats.
