When I first started teaching Kindergarten 3 years ago, my class was an added section that our school had not had before, therefore I had no materials/supplies. I have been slowly collecting/buying supplies on my own including books and math manipulatives. My school has provided a budget for consumable supplies like paper and glue but I have not been able to find any science supplies and my Kinders and I do something called "Mad Science" twice a month where we conduct a science experiment. The kids get to create a hypothesis and we record an outcome. Two of the main science standards in our state.
The kids cheer when they see Mad Science on our schedule because it is one of their favorite activities! However we could use some help making it a little more exciting than the typical baking soda/vinegar experiment! With lab coats and goggles the kids can role play and really feel what it is like to be a scientist thus making the whole experience more authentic. In addition, the graduated cylinders would replace the bottles I find in my recycling bin that we use for experiments and would expose students to real scientist tools. The microscope appears as if they would withstand the student in class with the least amount of self-control, so that when these students are exposed to real microscopes in older grades they will have some background knowledge on how they work and how to handle them.
Not only will my class be learning the state science standards with these materials, but they will be creating life-long memories and finding a love for learning science. The Kindergarten students of JRES would be so grateful if you choose to fund our project!
